The Holy Trinity Of Healthy Cooking
A healthy family needs to be a priority, but with such busy lives we can often find ourselves spending a lot less time preparing healthy meals than we would like to. So, what is the answer? Is it about preparing more in advance? Finding the healthiest takeaway meals? Or is it about getting into the right mindset? The answer is, surprisingly, a combination of all three.
Batch Cooking And Preparing In Advance
It’s been said countless times, if you plan your meals in advance, it stops you straying at the supermarket, picking up meals that aren’t particularly healthy and draining your bank balance. It’s true! When my family budgets well and prepares a healthy meal plan we not only save money, we end up eating less junk.
By preparing in advance, and getting your head around the calendar for the week, this means that you can use whatever spare moments you have to make a meal that you can reheat a few days later, when your super busy or when someone in the home is too unwell to cook.
Food Prep And Batch Cooking
Batch cooking is such an essential component to eating healthily these days that you, at the very least, need a handful of meals that can be cooked in advance, portioned up, and frozen.
I love batch cooking. It’s something my mum taught me from a young age and it not only saves money and time, it helps us to eat more healthy meals which is so important.
Batch Cooking Ideas
Here are some recipes and you may enjoy batch cooking for yourself or your family.
Healthy Takeaway Meals
Sometimes, it’s about finding the lesser of two evils, especially if the whole family is constantly busy. When we’re so busy in work, or doing anything outside of the house, or simply working from home, finding the time to come up with a new healthy meal means that we’re not expanding our palette.
There are numerous recipe subscription services that you can sign up for, that provide you with the ingredients that are already chopped, and these recipes come with cooking instructions.
My husband and I have tried a few recipe subscription services including Hello Fresh. We made an easy sweet potato cottage pie and it was delicious. Also when going out for a meal out with the family, because you don’t have time or energy to cook, usually, you can usually see the calorie count as part of the menu, so at the very least, you can make an informed decision.
The Right Mindset
Being healthy isn’t just about eating the right foods; it’s about being in the right mindset. And as we can tell ourselves that we “haven’t got enough time” to make a healthy meal, or we are just “too busy” all of the time, if we resign ourselves to a life of unhealthiness, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Instead, if you tell yourself that you’re going to make healthier meals, and you put in a little bit more effort than normal, these habits become learnt after a while. Any change can be difficult at the outset, but once you develop healthier habits such as healthy food swaps, healthy cooking and healthy eating, it gets much easier to stick to a healthier diet.
Healthy cooking involves a combination of factors. Because we’re so busy these days, we can find that healthy eating is the least of our worries and we tend to just go for something we enjoy, rather than seeking meals with the best nutrition.
