Cooking with children can be a nightmare for some, and let’s just not mention the mess. However I have always enjoyed cooking with kids and when My Little Sous Chef sent out their recipe book I was excited to get into the kitchen with my daughter and test out some healthy recipes.
The My Little Sous Chef Book has an interesting concept – there are adult recipes and alongside there is a child friendly version, with illustrations and simple instructions.

Is Hummus Good For You?
Making your own hummus and crackers is a fantastic idea. You can make much more hummus than you’d get in a small container from the store and the whole family can really enjoy it!
Hummus Nutrition
Hummus is very nutritious and packed with plant based protein. Hummus is naturally high in fat as it contains oil, however the protein and fibre, plus the vegetables added to the Hummus make it a tasty and nutritious treat.
We like to dip vegetables in our Hummus making it a healthy snack and much better than buying a chocolate bar or eating tasty cookies.
Hummus Ingredients
So here are the ingredients you will need for both the cheese crackers and the beetroot hummus recipe. The main ingredient for hummus is chickpeas, which is full of protein and super tasty!
Ingredients For the cheese crackers
230g Parmesan cheese
75g butter
150g plain flour
25ml cold water
1 pinch salt
For the Homemade hummus
2 beetroots cooked and peeled
1 can chickpeas
45mls olive oil
1 tsp ground cumin
salt and pepper to taste
How To Make Your Own Hummus – Beetroot Hummus
Here are the simple instructions showing you how to make hummus.
Roughly chop the cooked beetroots and place in a food processor with the other ingredients, except the salt and pepper.
Blitz until smooth, and season to taste.
It’s that simple. We loved making this Beetroot Hummus and it tasted so good. We will be making it again for Christmas!

How To Make Cheese Crackers
Pre heat the oven to 180 degrees
grate the cheese on the fine setting
Put the grated cheese, flour, salt in a bowl and mix well
Add the water and form into a dough
Gather the dough into a ball and flatten to a disc. Wrap in clingfilm and refrigerate for 30 mins.
Roll the dough out to 2mm thick and cut out the shapes.
Bake in the oven for 15 mins
